How to make a car out of a box

8 01 2012

Littlelam’s school holiday project this term was for to make a craft related to the theme of vehicles. Our first attempt over the Dec season was to use small boxes and turn them into little vehicles like cars and buses, but because everything was too rectangular, the whole fleet started looking like weird buses. Besides, we never got round to creating the base ie: the roads and city. So we sort of gave up halfway. And I forgot all about it.

Fast forward to the 1st day of school. I realize too late that she has yet to complete a project, and I have a brainwave! My neighbor walks by my door about to chuck an old cardboard box into the recycling bin, and I quickly ask her for it instead. And here’s what we did with it:

Camera craft

15 10 2011

The past 3 weeks have been a whirlwind and I’ve actually gone on 2 staycations both in Sentosa. Will blog about that later, but for now, just a quick post on Littlelam’s increasing creativity and ability to execute her ideas practically.

I think there is some truth in the fact that by 5 years of age, kids are better able to handle items like scissors, tape, butter knives and even musical instruments. Lately Littlelam has been coming back from school with a plethora of rather raw-looking handmade crafts that are rather bizarre in nature. For example, a sculpture of toilet rolls cut in various places; lanterns, and random odds and ends that she claims are ‘bags’, a weather machine etc. I found out that her class has a craft corner that allows free play of the items so the kids just make what they want, all by themselves. I thought that was a great way to inspire creativity.

So when I bought her a box of Princess cookies the other day (ok, it’s just a Disney princess box with jewel shapes cookies inside), I was pleasantly surprised when she looked at it and declared, “Ooh the box is so nice! Don’t throw it away ok, because I want to make a camera with it!”

So here’s the camera! Ok for this craft I definitely had to help out quite a bit because of the difficulty and danger in using a penknife to cut out the various holes in the box. But the concept planning was entirely hers- I got her to examine her toy camera and construct the required parts:
